Relax At The Beach

Many people move to Florida for the sparkling sands, gentle breezes and lapping waves. Here is a guide to the best of beaches and boating parks:

Beaches

Sanibel/Captiva Islands: Beaches on the islands and along the causeway; pier at Lighthouse Point at the east end. For information,call 472-1080.

Bowditch Point Regional Park, Fort Myers Beach: Newest beach at north end of Estero Island, Restrooms, showers, picnicking, grills,hiking paths, bike racks, pavilion, handicapped-accessible boardwalk. To reach, catch the trolley running from Main Street park and ride lot, just north on Mantanzas Pass Bridge.

Lynn Hall Memorial Park, Fort Myers Beach: On the northend of Estero Boulevard. Free fishing pier, parking, picnic tables, barbecue grills, swings, bathhouse and restrooms. Private refreshments nearby. Beach continues south with rental concessions, refreshments and volleyball.

Lover's Key State Recreation Area, Carl E. Johnson Park: Picnicking, restrooms, boardwalks fishing, nature trails, tram ride to the beach.

Bonita Beach: At Hickory Boulevard and Bonita Beach Road at the southern end of Bonita Beach. Picnicking, restrooms, showers, volleyball, refreshments.

Barefoot Beach State Recreation Area: North of Wiggins Pass in Collier County, off west end of Bonita Beach Road.

Vanderbilt Beach: Starting in North Naples at Vanderbilt Drive on the south, to Delnor Wiggins Pass State Park at the north. Milesof white sandy beaches, freshwater showers and metered parking on the south.The state park is at the gulf end of 111th Ave./Bluebill Ave., grills, picnicking, boat ramp, observation tower, restrooms with wheelchair access, large parking areas, bath houses and showers. Good fishing in Wiggins Pass. Fee. Open 8 a.m. to sunset. For more information, call 597-6196.

Clam Pass, Seagate Drive: Tram to beach, restrooms, concessions, showers, nature trail.

Lowdermilk Park: Along Gulf Shore Boulevard at Banyan Boulevard. Metered parking, children's play area, beach accessible chairs for the handicapped, volleyball courts, duck pond, restrooms, showers, a pavilion, picnic tables and concessions. For more information, call 434-4698.

Naples: Ten miles of sandy beaches, from Gordon Passon the south to Seagate Drive on the north. The Naples Fishing Pier is the crown jewel at the west end of 12th Avenue S., extending 1,000 feet intothe gulf. Metered parking, bait, snack bar, restrooms and outdoor showers are available, and hours are 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. for concessions.

Tigertail Beach: On Hernando Drive on Marco Island. The gulf-front park features sailing and windsurfing and has a concession stand, picnic facilities, water sports equipment rentals, volleyball, restrooms and showers. For more information, call 642-8414.

Caxambas Pass: south end of S. Collier Blvd. on Marco Island.

Boat Ramps

Imperial Boat Ramp: U.S. 41 N., just south of ImperialRiver. Four boat ramps, a canoe launch, 500-foot boardwalk, wetland interpretive area and woodland picnic area.

Bayview Park: Danford Street off Thomasson Drive. Picnic, restrooms.

Cocohatchee River Park: Vanderbilt Drive just south of Wiggins Pass Road. Boat ramp, bathhouse, playground, picnic.

Caxambas Park: S. Collier Boulevard on south end of Marco Island. Picnic area.

Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park: County Road 901 off U.S. 41 N. Picnic, swimming, fishing. For more information, call 597-6196.

Lake Trafford: Lake Trafford Road, near Immokalee. Picnic, fresh-water fishing.

Naples Landing: East end of Broad Avenue S. Picnic area.

951 Boat Launch: State Road 951 just north of Marco Island.
